I was inspired to write this song after watching a documentary about the tightrope walker Phillipe Petit. He walked across the Twin Towers on a tightrope in the 1970s without a safety net. It was haunting to see the towers that no longer exist, and a very beautiful film about one man's dedication to his art.

Lyrics

Balancing on a wire
Threaded between two towers
Fallen
Like lovers lost

Walks where the angels tread
A tiny black silhouette
A demon
Where no man goes

He is the man on wire
He is a death-defying dreamer
He walks the line

In death there is life
Only when we fall
Such a fine line between
Things that join us all

Though we know we must die
We don’t know how to live
He lives his dream
He lives his dream

Just like a thief in the night
Waiting for daylight
To come creeping
The city sleeps

Then in the first light
He steps slowly onto the line
Knows this
Could be his last

But when his feet are on the line
He lets go of all his fear
Of all his fear

Then he dances on the wire
Nothing else is in his mind
World below seems far away

Nothing there can take this feeling
Of flying, of being free, of being free

Balancing on a wire
Threaded between two towers
Fallen
Like lovers lost

Walks where the angels tread
Tiny black silhouette
A demon
Where no man goes

He is the man on wire
He is a death-defying dreamer
He walks the line

In death there is life
Only when we fall
Such a fine line between
Things that join us all

Though we know we must die
We don’t know how to live
He lives his dream
He lives his dream, he lives his dream
